Southern Staircase Donates Grand Staircase to HBASC Renovation Project

As plans were being made for the HBA of South Carolina’s office renovation project and donations were being solicited, the Board of Directors searched for a reputable staircase builder who could supply a quality staircase to serve as the centerpiece for the office. When Southern Staircase came through with their donation, everyone knew they could rest assured the staircase would be a spectacle.

Started in 1983, Southern Staircase has grown to be a nationwide leader in staircase design and construction. Providing builders and homeowners with curved, straight and spiral stair designs, they have four manufacturing facilities and eight regional sales offices, including their newest manufacturing facility in Summerville, SC. They also have sales offices in Columbia, Greenville and Myrtle Beach.

Southern Staircase began using CAD design software in 1986, using several programs developed by their own employees. This new technology allowed them to design and build elaborate curved and flared stair packages, in addition to their straight stair products. As more and more builders began to realize that pre-manufactured stairs were better in quality, they also realized that they most often cost less than the site-built variety. To further complement their staircase products, Southern Staircase began to carry its own line of stair parts and accessories in addition to carrying popular brands of products.

The company is the product of two medical equipment executives with an entrepreneurial spirit who purchased a small stair company in Chamblee, GA called “Quick Flight Stair.” Though they knew very little about the stair business, both of them saw plenty of opportunities in the small company. It had a unique concept: manufacturing basic stairs for apartments and single-family homes and delivering the assembled products to the jobsite for installation.

Using their strengths in sales, marketing and technology, the new owners quickly immersed themselves into the business. With an eye toward expansion into neighboring states, the company was renamed Southern Staircase. They expanded their product line and began using computer technology to standardize staircase design and construction. The company began to grow steadily, priding itself on quality customer service, a quality finished product and creating an atmosphere where employees were empowered to excel.
