The Home Builders Association (HBA) of Greater Columbia announced recently that South Carolina Representative Nikki Haley has been named the recipient of this year’s HBA “Champion of Housing Award.” Presented annually to individuals who have distinguished themselves through their support of the home building industry, the HBA of Greater Columbia chose to honor Rep. Haley, who represents District 87 (Lexington County).

“Nikki Haley is one of the hardest-working, steadfastly pro-business leaders our state has seen in quite some time, and her consistent support of home builders here in the Midlands and across South Carolina reflects that,” said HBA President Mike Lowman. “The intelligence, energy and creativity she brings to her job are invaluable assets for our taxpayers, our industry and our state.”

After receiving the endorsement of the HBA in her first campaign for the House three years ago, Rep. Haley quickly showed her leadership skills when she was elected President of the House Freshman Caucus in 2005. In 2006, Speaker Bobby Harrell appointed Rep. Haley as a House Republican Whip. She currently serves on the influential House Labor, Commerce & Industry Committee.

“Our ability to create and protect jobs in South Carolina depends on the active involvement of strong, pro-business advocates like our state’s home builders,” Rep. Haley said. “They represent the front line of our economy, and their commitment to enhancing prosperity for all South Carolinians is second to none.”

A key player in the HBA’s recent legislative successes on tort reform, workers’ comp reform and coastal insurance reform, Rep. Haley was also a strong advocate for property tax relief and other reforms designed to put more money into our state’s economy. She has consistently rated among the top tier of legislators in either chamber for her pro-business voting record.

Rep. Haley is an accountant/ business owner residing in Lexington, S.C. with her husband Michael and their two children, Rena and Nalin. She is a graduate of Clemson University.
