Thompson First to Earn Green Building Designation
Tony Thompson of Remodeling Services Unlimited in Columbia is the first South Carolina HBA member and the first Greater Columbia HBA member to earn the NAHB’s Certified Green Professional (CGP) designation.
“Being a Certified Green Professional demonstrates to everyone that I care about the environment and that I've taken the time to become more educated in the area,” says Thompson. “I'm always looking for ways to gain additional knowledge in my field.”
The NAHB’s Certified Green Professional designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes — without driving up the cost of construction. Classwork leading to the designation provides a solid background in green building methods, as well as the tools to reach consumers, from the organization leading the charge to provide market-driven green building solutions to the home building industry.
To become a CGP, a member must:
• Have a minimum of two years of building industry experience,
• Sign and adhere to the CGP Code of Ethics,
• Complete the Green Building for Building Professionals course, and
• Complete the Business Management for Building Professionals course OR hold an NAHB designation.
“At the time I took the Green Building for Building Professionals course, I did not realize I would qualify for my CGP, but I qualified because of the other designations that I have already obtained (CGR & CAPS),” says Thompson. “So it made it a no brainer to go for my CGP.”
During last year’s convention, the SCHBA offered the Green Building for Building Professionals course. Any of those attendees can easily get their CGP designation by attending the Business Management for Building Professionals course at this year’s convention in Myrtle Beach. More information about the convention and the courses being offered can be found online at www.HBAofSC.com.
