SC Members Already Certified Green Professionals
The NAHB unveiled the new Certified Green Professional (CGP) designation program in February at IBS, and some SC members have already become graduates. Tony Thompson (Columbia), Pete Loy (Mt. Pleasant), and Steve Alfaro (Ft. Mill) are the first around the state to become Certified Green Professionals. Several other members have submitted their application and are waiting to be notified by the NAHB, including HBASC President Bill Smith..
“Getting the CGP designation is simple, especially if you already have an NAHB designation or if you took the Green Building for Building Professionals course at last year’s state convention,” said Bill Smith, HBASC president and convention committee member. “This course is one of the two required courses needed to get the CGP designation, and we’re offering the other required course, Business Management for Building Professionals, at this year’s state convention.”
In order to get any of the NAHB designations, the candidate must take the business management course. If a designation holder wants to become a CGP, the business management course would automatically count towards the CGP designation, keeping the candidate from having to re-take the course.
Maintaining the CGP designation has a few requirements, like 12 hours of continuing education every three years, with a minimum of six hours coming from The NAHB University of Housing educational activities and a minimum of eight hours coming from green building industry related educational activities.
Here a list of requirements for getting the CGP designation:
• Green Building for Building Professionals course
• Business Management for Building Professionals course OR hold an NAHB designation
• A minimum of two years of building industry experience
• Adherence to the CGP Code of Ethics
• Pay a minimal graduation fee
