Exemptions Made for CAPS Candidates; CAASH Requirements Revised

The NAHB University of Housing recently announced changes to the CAPS and CAASH designations, two designations that focus on older adult living.

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) candidates can forgo the designation's required Business Management for Building Professionals course if they have one of the following designations: CGR, GMR, CGA, CGB, CGP, GMB, CGA, CR, CKD, CBD, AIA, ASID, GRI or CCIM. This list will be reviewed periodically and additional designations may be added. Individuals who have earned a Masters of Business Administration from an accredited University within 10 years of submitting their CAPS graduation application are also exempt. However, it is highly recommended that all individuals seeking the CAPS designation take the Business Management for Building Professionals course which focuses on business principles relevant to residential construction.

The Certified Active Adult Specialist in Housing (CAASH) requirements were revised at the 2009 Spring Board of Directors meeting. Candidates no longer need to provide evidence of 50 elective credits. To earn the CAASH designation, candidates must successfully complete the three required courses, have a minimum of three years experience in the 50+ housing field, and adhere to the CAASH Code of Ethics. The continuing education requirements remain in place. Individuals who have completed the three required courses may choose one of the following options in order to complete the graduation process:

1. Send in his or her application now to become a CAASH.
2. Finish his or her Professional Profile demonstrating evidence of 50 elective credits, and send it with the application by December 31, 2009 to be reviewed under the previous requirements.

NAHB members who send in their graduation applications by June 30, 2010 will pay a reduced graduation fee of just $95. If you have questions regarding the revised CAASH requirements, please call The Professional Designation Help Line at 800-368-5242 x8154 or email designations@nahb.com.
