EPA R410A/Puron Phaseout Effective Now

To protect the ozone layer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has created a 10-year phased plan for replacing R-22 or Freon® in air conditioners with R-410A or Puron®. The first phase in this transition began January 1, 2010.

The refrigerant, which is know to deplete the ozone layer, is commonly used in refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, especially in residential air conditioners. With the first part of the transition in action, manufacturers may no longer produce air conditioning systems that use R-22 refrigerant. Residential air conditioning systems manufactured after January 1, 2010 will now use R-410A refrigerant exclusively.
