Members Help Raise Money for Troops to Come Home |

The HBA of SC helped rake in more than half of the $88,000 needed to bring the SC National Guard 218th Brigade Combat Team home before deploying to Afghanistan for a one-year tour of duty.
South Carolina Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell praised the Home Builders’ Association of South Carolina and its members at the annual Bird Supper for stepping up to the plate and answering the call of duty. “Words cannot express how grateful we are to you for opening your checkbooks and giving to an important cause,” said S.C. Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell. “You’ve made life easier for our troops and their families, and you’ve helped give them a guaranteed trip home.” Members like Micheal, Stewart and Steven Mungo donated a significant amount to the ‘Defenders of Freedom’ fund. They gave $20,000 to help the Guardsmen get home on a 10-day leave to visit their families before their deployment in late April.“These aren’t regular active duty people. They have sacrificed their careers and family time to protect us,” said Steven Mungo. “The thought of these fine people being deployed, either without seeing their loved ones, or having to undertake the financial burden to do so, is unconscionable.”Now, our troops will have the chance to see their loved ones before heading over seas. Thanks to all of the home builders who gave, families and troops no longer have to worry about whether or not they’ll get time together before the deployment. The fund, now at more than $100,000, will help provide bus transportation for any soldier wishing to return home during their leave. Other organizations had a hand in raising the money; however, the HBA of SC was able to raise the most. Any extra money in the fund will be given to the SC National Guard. |
